Lot 237:
Collection of Vintage Figural and Novelty Pencil Sharpeners, Including Disney and Die-Cast Examples, Circa 1940-1970
Description
This diverse collection comprises approximately twenty-five vintage novelty pencil sharpeners, representing a broad spectrum of mid-twentieth-century design and manufacturing. The lot includes examples constructed from die-cast metal, lithographed tinplate, moulded plastic, and wood. Notable highlights include a Disney-licensed Donald Duck character sharpener, two miniature world globes with detailed lithography, a die-cast pistol housed in a faux-leather holster, and a Scottie dog in vibrant red plastic. The assortment further features an owl, an elephant, a horse, a miniature radio, a mantel clock, and a camera. Of particular interest is a desk-calendar style sharpener retained in its original green and yellow Plastic Novelty Pencil Sharpener cardboard box. These items are characteristic of the novelty stationery and “dime store” collectibles produced in Japan, Hong Kong, and Europe during the post-war era. No scale or ruler is present in the imagery.
Condition report:
The collection is in good vintage condition overall, showing signs of wear consistent with age and use. Visible paint loss and surface oxidation are present on several of the metal components, particularly the globes and die-cast figures. The plastic and wooden items show light surface scuffing and minor patina. The original cardboard box for the novelty sharpener exhibits shelf wear and softening to the corners. The Donald Duck sharpener shows some fading to the decorative finish. Most pieces appear to be complete with their original sharpening mechanisms, though functionality has not been tested.
