An Edwardian Sterling Silver Repousse Picture Frame Birmingham 1911 Elkington and Co Category: Silver & Silver-plated
Description
An Edwardian sterling silver picture frame of square form, designed in the Rococo Revival style. The front features an ornate repousse and embossed mount decorated with scrolling foliate motifs, C-scrolls, and floral sprays set against a shaped, scalloped outer border. The silver front is mounted to a dark velvet-covered wooden backing and is secured by four brass pins. The reverse features an integrated easel stand for tabletop display. The silver is struck with a full set of English hallmarks on the lower front edge, including the maker’s mark E and Co for Elkington and Co, the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and the date letter m for 1911. This piece is a classic example of the high-quality silver manufacturing produced in Birmingham during the early 20th century. Measurements: Approximately 18 cm x 18 cm.
Condition report:
The frame is presented in good antique condition. The silver surface shows significant natural tarnish and oxidation consistent with age, which could be polished to a bright finish if desired. There is a light accumulation of dust on the glass and within the recesses of the silverwork. The velvet backing exhibits minor wear and thinning to the pile, particularly at the corners and the easel stand hinge. Two adhesive inventory labels are currently attached to the left side of the silver front. No significant dents, splits, or repairs are visible to the repousse work.
