Lot 179:
Early 20th Century Solid Oak Presentation Armchair
Description
An early 20th-century solid oak open armchair, likely dating to the late 1930s. The chair features a shaped crest rail above a padded back and seat, upholstered in dark brown rexine and secured with decorative oxidised metal studs. The frame is constructed from solid oak with curved out-swept arms and square-section legs, all unified by a sturdy H-stretcher. A silver-toned presentation plaque is affixed to the upper back rail, inscribed: Presented to the Mens Class by Mr and Mrs Warburton in memory of their son John Keith, 23 April 1939. This armchair represents a classic example of institutional or communal furniture from the interwar period, similar in form to a billiards room chair. Dimensions: 95cm H x 62cm W x 58cm D.
Condition report:
The frame is structurally sound. The original varnish finish shows significant age-related wear, including heavy crazing throughout. The rexine upholstery is worn and features a visible tear to the seat. The presentation plaque and metal studs show a natural patina consistent with age.
