Lot 169:
A Set of Four Edwardian Mahogany Side Chairs in the Queen Anne Revival Style
Description
A matched set of four mahogany side chairs dating from the early 20th century, crafted in the Queen Anne revival style. Each chair is constructed from solid mahogany with a dark-stained finish. The backrest is designed with a continuous top rail and stiles enclosing a decorative pierced splat, which features a central carved rosette and fan-shaped motifs. The chairs are raised on front cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, balanced by splayed legs at the rear. The chairs incorporate drop-in seats, a traditional construction feature allowing for ease of reupholstery. This set represents the enduring popularity of 18th-century English furniture designs during the Edwardian period. No maker’s marks or stamps are present. Dimensions: H 95 cm x W 50 cm x D 45 cm.
Condition report:
The chairs are structurally sound and stable. The dark-stained finish exhibits moderate surface wear, including scuffs, small abrasions, and light scratches consistent with age and regular domestic use. The drop-in seats are currently upholstered in a dark fabric that is heavily worn and stained, necessitating full replacement. There is no evidence of active woodworm, major splits, or previous structural repairs.
