Description

An unmarked late 19th-century Victorian dual-purpose optical viewer, designed as a combined graphoscope and stereoscope. The instrument is constructed from polished mahogany in a folding box form, featuring a large circular magnifying lens for viewing standard photographs and a pair of smaller circular eyepieces for stereoscopic cards. The exterior is embellished with decorative cast-metal foliate corner mounts and a central shaped escutcheon. The hinged design allows the unit to fold into a compact rectangular case for storage. The interior contains a wooden card holder mounted on a sliding metal rail to facilitate focal adjustment. Materials include mahogany, glass, and white-metal hardware, likely nickel-plated brass.

Condition report:

Optical clarity is good; the glass lenses are clear and free from significant chips or cracks, showing only minor surface dust and typical age-related marks. The mechanical folding mechanism and sliding focus rail are in good working order. The mahogany case exhibits minor surface scuffs, light scratches, and general wear consistent with age and use. The unit appears complete with all primary optical and mechanical components present.
