Lot 103:
A Large Chinese or Vietnamese Mother-of-Pearl and Soapstone Inlaid Circular Box and Cover, 19th Century restoration needed on lid
Description
A substantial circular lidded box, likely originating from Southern China or Vietnam during the late 19th century, crafted from a dark hardwood ground. The lid features a prominent central medallion intricately inlaid with soapstone, bone, and mother-of-pearl, depicting a narrative scene of figures within a traditional pavilion landscape. This central panel is enclosed by a continuous leiwen or Greek key border, further surrounded by delicate sprays of flowering blossoms. The exterior sides of both the cover and the base are similarly embellished with finely cut mother-of-pearl inlays depicting avian subjects amongst floral branches. Such boxes were frequently utilised as workboxes or for the storage of betel nut sets and dowry items. Diameter: approximately 30 cm.
Condition report:
The box exhibits significant condition issues consistent with age and use. There is substantial loss and deterioration to the central inlaid medallion on the lid, with several soapstone and bone elements missing or damaged. There are scattered minor losses to the peripheral mother-of-pearl floral inlays and the leiwen border. The wooden surface shows general wear, minor abrasions, and age-related drying.
