Lot 74:
Attributed to J. & E. Stevens, Mechanical Elephant with Howdah Bank, Cast Iron, Late 19th/Early 20th Century
Description
Attributed to J. & E. Stevens or a similar American manufacturer, this is a classic mechanical coin-depositing bank. Constructed from heavy painted cast iron, the toy features an elephant with a decorative howdah (saddle). The mechanism is designed so that a coin placed in the trunk is deposited into the howdah when the tail lever is moved. This example dates from the late 19th to early 20th century and is offered without the original box.
Condition report:
The polychrome paint retains a good amount of original grey, red, and gold colour, though there is significant chipping and wear consistent with age and play use. The mechanical function is currently untested; the trunk remains in a raised position. The item is incomplete, missing the base plate trap and the tail lever. No original packaging is present.
