Lot 4:
Mid-20th Century Italian Marquetry Inlaid Musical Jewellery Table
Description
A mid-20th century Italian decorative work table in the Continental Rococo Revival style, functioning as a musical jewellery or sewing box. The rectangular top is the focal point, featuring elaborate, high-contrast marquetry inlay with intricate foliate and scrollwork patterns in light and dark wood veneers, including boxwood and walnut, on a warm fruitwood ground. The hinged lid, which has a distinct red-painted edge, opens via a modern continuous metal piano hinge to reveal a divided interior compartment. The piece is supported by four slender cabriole legs with a mahogany-type finish. This form is characteristic of mid-century Italian craftsmanship, often produced as functional decorative items for the export market and frequently incorporating Swiss or Italian musical movements. H 43cm x W 37cm x D 28cm.
Condition report:
The table is structurally sound with the high-gloss finish well-preserved. Minor surface wear and light scratches are present, consistent with age and domestic use. The interior dividers are intact and the hinge is functional. No maker\'s marks are visible; a small auction lot sticker is present on the apron. The musical mechanism is present but has not been tested for functionality.
