Lot 3:
A Large Late 19th Century Georgian Style Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase
Description
A substantial late 19th or early 20th-century breakfront bookcase, expertly crafted in the Georgian Revival style. The unit is designed in two sections for ease of transport, comprising an upper glazed cabinet and a lower cupboard base. The upper section features a prominent stepped cornice above three glazed doors, each decorated with hand-carved fan motifs at the corners of the mouldings. The interior is fitted with a series of adjustable shelves. The lower base section mirrors the triple-door configuration with solid raised-panel doors, also featuring decorative corner carvings. The piece is primarily constructed from mahogany with a dark-stained finish, showcasing a rich grain throughout. Both sections are fitted with brass-lined keyholes, though the piece is currently lacking its keys. The construction is robust, typical of high-quality late Victorian or Edwardian cabinet making, intended for a library or formal study setting. Dimensions: H 218cm x W 183cm x D 46cm.
Condition report:
The bookcase is presented in good structural condition, maintaining its integrity as a functional piece of furniture. The mahogany finish shows general surface wear, including light scratches, minor scuffs, and a build-up of dust commensurate with age and domestic use. There are no visible signs of active woodworm, significant timber splits, or major losses to the carvings. The glazing is intact across all three upper doors. Please note that while locks are present, the keys are missing and will require replacements.
