Description

An antique 19th-century topographical watercolour on paper attributed to the artist Louisa Fennell, a notable chronicler of Wakefield’s historic architecture. The composition depicts the Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin situated on the medieval stone bridge over the River Calder in Wakefield. The artist has captured the intricate Gothic architectural details of the chapel, including the ornate window tracery, battlements, and pinnacles, alongside the structural arches of the bridge. The work is executed in a restrained palette of earth tones and greys, characteristic of the English school of topographical painting. It is presented in a dark green textured mount with a gold-line border and a moulded gilt wood frame. An auction lot label numbered 7754 is present on the right-hand side of the mount.

Frame: 41 cm x 32 cm
