A Pair of Balinese Carved Hardwood Mythological Figures
Description
A pair of hand-carved sculptural figures in the Balinese style, dating from the mid-20th century. The figures depict celestial or mythological characters, possibly from the Ramayana or Mahabharata epics. Each figure is rendered in a dynamic, upright stance upon a tiered integral base. They feature tall, ornate conical headdresses known as makuta and are dressed in traditional attire with detailed incised patterns representing textiles. One figure includes stylised wing-like elements at the back, characteristic of celestial beings or characters such as Garuda. The items are carved from a dense, dark-toned tropical hardwood with a dark-stained finish and an aged patina. A white adhesive label with the handwritten number 501 is present on the base of one figure.
