Lot 304:
British Sterling Silver Kiddush Cup and Assorted Flatware Collection, Late Victorian to Early 20th Century
Description
This collection comprises a sterling silver Kiddush cup and four pieces of fine British silver flatware, illustrating the integration of Jewish ritual traditions within the context of high-quality English craftsmanship. The Kiddush cup is designed as a flaring beaker with a polished finish, featuring a distinctive openwork band at the base. This decorative band incorporates the Hebrew word Gefen (גפן), meaning vine, which refers to the traditional blessing over wine, Borei Peri HaGefen (Creator of the fruit of the vine), recited to sanctify the Sabbath and Festivals. The accompanying flatware includes a tea spoon with London hallmarks, a pair of sugar tongs featuring bright-cut engraved motifs, a serving spoon with a decorative shell-form bowl, and a butter knife with a scalloped edge. Both the serving spoon and the butter knife are fitted with carved mother-of-pearl handles, a hallmark of Victorian and Edwardian aesthetic preferences. All five items bear clear British sterling silver hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling purity, the anchor for Birmingham, and the leopard’s head for London. These pieces represent the refined domestic culture of the Anglo-Jewish community during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where traditional ritual objects were often paired with elegant English tableware.
