Description

A substantial Japanese porcelain charger from the Meiji period (1868–1912), decorated in the traditional Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and rich gilt. The asymmetrical composition is centred around a dynamic arrangement of overlapping fan and hand-scroll shaped reserves. These reserves depict a classic mountainous landscape with architectural details alongside dense floral sprays of chrysanthemums and peonies. The surrounding deep blue ground is meticulously embellished with fine gold karakusa scrolling vines and punctuated by circular medallions containing geometric fretwork and seigaiha wave patterns. The reverse remains uninspected due to mounting but typically features underglaze blue floral sprays. Diameter: approximately 47 cm.
