Description

A diverse collection of decorative wooden objects and jewellery boxes, primarily of Middle Eastern and Anglo-Indian origin. The group features several examples of Syrian or Egyptian Damascene craftsmanship, including a hexagonal lidded box and a folding chessboard, both intricately inlaid with mother-of-pearl and multi-coloured wood micro-mosaics in geometric starburst patterns. Also included is a substantial Anglo-Indian jewellery box in a dark-stained hardwood, featuring pierced openwork scroll carving and a decorative handle. The lot is further comprised of various smaller trinket boxes, some exhibiting Persian Khatam-kari style marquetry and others with floral and geometric motifs. One box displays the characteristic swirling grain of Moroccan Thuya burl. These items represent a variety of traditional regional techniques including parquetry, marquetry, and relief carving. Largest box measures approximately 28 cm in width.
