Lot 191:
A Pair of Articulated Folk Art Figures Including a 19th Century Wooden Jumping Jack and a Balinese Kepeng Coin Statue
Description
This lot comprises two distinct articulated folk art figures of diverse cultural origins. The first is a 19th century hand-painted wooden jumping jack puppet, depicting a character in a large black hat with white patterning, a yellow patterned tunic, and black trousers with white dotted borders. It is constructed from wood or composite board with jointed limbs and retains its operating strings, featuring a small white inventory label marked 6182 on the chest. The second item is a traditional Balinese Kepeng coin statue, intricately fashioned from numerous Chinese-style cash coins with square centre holes. These are joined together and adorned with ornate gold-toned accents representing a stylised headpiece, chest piece, tiered sarong, and elongated hands. Such figures are significant in Balinese culture, often representing deities or used as ritual offerings to ensure prosperity. Jumping jack measures approximately 30 cm in length; Kepeng figure measures approximately 35 cm in length.
