Description

A fine late 19th or early 20th-century system cane featuring a concealed, collapsible parasol. The L-shaped handle is crafted from polished horn, showing a natural color transition from a light cream at the top to a dark, translucent brown at the base. It attaches to the shaft via a threaded brass connector. A decorative white metal collar separates the handle from the shaft, featuring ornate, embossed foliate and scrollwork designs in a repousse style. No hallmarks are visible upon inspection. The shaft is composed of multiple screw-together sections made of a polished, dark-stained hardwood. This is a parasol cane where the upper section of the wooden shaft unscrews to reveal a concealed, spring-loaded collapsible umbrella with a square black fabric canopy and a metal rib mechanism. Overall length: 35 inches.

Condition report:

The horn handle and wooden shaft exhibit minor surface scratches and light wear consistent with age and use. The brass threading is functional and allows for secure assembly. The white metal collar shows light surface wear but remains securely attached. The internal umbrella mechanism shows some surface oxidation and tarnish on the metal ribs. The black fabric canopy remains intact but shows minor fraying and small losses, particularly at the corners and along the edges.
