Lot 160:
Gnarled Root-wood Handle, Bamboo walking cane , 19th Century
Description
This 19th-century system cane features a knob-style handle crafted from a dark, gnarled natural material, likely polished root-wood or dense horn, with a distinctive mottled texture and high-gloss finish. The shaft is composed of light-coloured, segmented bamboo, reinforced by four brass collars. Following historical consensus for this specific construction, the item is identified as a swordstick, a type of system cane designed to conceal a blade within the shaft. The tip is finished with a matching brass ferrule. A small paper inventory label numbered 9307 is affixed to the upper shaft. Length: 92 cm.
