Lot 15:
Late Victorian Arts and Crafts Carved Oak Spinning Chair, Attributed to the Bray Art Furniture Industry
Description
A fine example of Celtic Revival furniture from the Arts and Crafts movement, dating to circa 1900. This spinning chair is constructed from solid oak with a deep, dark-stained finish. The chair features a distinctive double-splat back, intricately hand-carved with traditional Celtic-inspired interlace patterns and circular sunburst or whorl motifs. The seat is deeply dished and contoured, finished with a decorative carved border that complements the backrest. It is supported by four square-section legs, each featuring carved detailing along the outer faces and joined by simple rungs. This specific style of carving and form is highly characteristic of the Bray Art Furniture Industry in Ireland, a workshop renowned for its hand-carved oak pieces that drew inspiration from medieval and ancient Celtic designs. The construction utilizes traditional joinery consistent with the period. Dimensions: 88cm H x 32cm W x 35cm D.
